Central Montana Youth Mentoring Program

Advisor: Ms. Yvette Hersel

Mentors:

  • Mentors are supportive high school students who build relationships with an elementary student by offering them encouragement to help cultivate a positive and healthy lifestyle.
  • Mentors strive to make the mentee feel special by spending a few hours each month with mentees.
  • Mentors are interviewed and trained.
  • Mentors are not meant to replace parents, guardians, or teachers, or to play the role of disciplinarians or child care providers. Rather, they can help encourage positive choices, promote high self-esteem, support academic achievement and introduce new ideas.

What Mentors & Mentees Do ...

We encourage no and low cost activities: it doesn’t take a lot of money or a special occasion to make a difference! Just spending a few hours a month doing fun activities such as:

  • Playing games
  • Reading a book
  • Doing crafts
  • Going fishing
  • Going for a walk or bike ride
  • Baking cookies
  • Playing catch
  • Going sledding

(CMYMP does provide coupons for the pair to enjoy special outings such as the movie theater, dining, and bowling as well as provide supplies for crafts, games, and activities.)

Mission: To pair high school students with elementary students to bolster self-esteem, build communication, increase tolerance and enhance life skills through bonds of friendship and leadership.

Purpose: To make a positive difference in the lives of children and youth primarily through a relationship with a caring teen, and to assist them in achieving their highest potential as they grow to become productive, responsible, and caring citizens.
